This year, the annual ProgPal field trip will be a one day visit to the classic Carboniferous localities in the Peak District on Saturday the 9th of June. Delegates will visit Mam Tor, which gives fantastic views of the Dark and White Peaks, where we will briefly discuss the glacial history of the area. We will then descend via the Broken Road to Castleton, stopping at points of interest along the way. Lunch will last two hours allowing delegates to explore the beautiful village and pubs, or the Blue John Caverns. After lunch we will walk back to the minibuses via Winnat’s Pass – a limestone gorge interpreted as an inter-reef channel, Cow Low Nick which contains Carboniferous Goniatites and Windy Knoll where William Boyd Dawkins collected many Pleistocene mammals for the University of Manchester Museum.
Delegates are reminded that many of the sites we will visit are Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) so we politely request that you do not bring rock hammers with you.
